OSA Annual Souvenir URMI 2020 & Meghna Memorial: Article Invitation (7/11/2020)

Dear Friends,This has been an unprecedented time. Every year OSA annual souvenir is published to commemorate the annual convention. The pandemic has changed many things and for the first time in OSA history OSA annual convention is postponed. Like every other communities and organizations, we are also learning to live through this pandemic finding adaptation methods. Thus, the decision to continue the tradition of publishing the annual souvenir has been suggested and agreed upon by OSA executives. A special souvenir team is formed to take up the task.
We, the editorial team of 2020 OSA Souvenir URMI invite original high quality articles in the following categories from OSA members to be published in the souvenir.Stories, Poems, Essays, Feature Articles, Research Articles(Research articles on OSA history and Odia life in North America are strongly encouraged) Length of the write up should not be more than 1-2 pages for poetry, four pages for write-ups in other categories. Only one write up will be considered per person even if multiple articles are received. Please pay attention for a better article since some criteria will be followed to select the articles to maintain quality of the souvenir.
Article Preparation
  • English articles should be in word document format (Calibri 11 font). No page numbering is needed. Odia articles should be typed in Odiphon, Lipikar or using the Google Unicode software at https://www.google.com/inputtools/try/(choose the language Oriya). If you type in any other Odia software, you can convert to unicode using https://goo.gl/KzQFaW
  • Please compose your write-up in MS word.
  • Make sure to spell check before sending.
  • Each write up should be accompanied by author’s photograph and full postal address. No other description is required. For convenience, give your article name asFirstnameLastname_ArticleTitleShort_OSA2019.docExa: JohnDoe_OdishaTemples_OSA2019.doc
  • This will help us in sorting and keeping track of articles.
  • Last date for submission: July 11, 2020. This deadline is Final and no extension will be made.
  • Please prepare your articles early and submit before the deadline.

After the sad demise of Meghna Mahapatra, daughter of Santosh and Lipika Mahapatra, in a tragic road accident on 5th November 2005, members of the Michigan Chapter of the Orissa Society of the Americas have set up the Meghna Memorial Fund, managed by the Meghna Memorial Trust. This was made possible through generous contributions from many people, including Meghna‘s parents. To commemorate Meghna and pay tribute to her creative spirit, it was deemed appropriate to institute the ―Meghna Memorial Award for Creative Writing.RulesThe Meghna Memorial Award was started in 2007. There are two awards:

  • The Junior Award is for Children of ages between 7 and 12.
  • The Senior Award is for Children of ages between 13 and 18.

The winner in each group will be recognized with a certificate, a check for $150, and a copy of the Souvenir issue in which his/her article is published.

Criteria for Recognition
  • A panel of judges will look at all the writings by children in the junior and senior age groups will be judged for exceptional creativity and quality of writing.
  • The formats and styles are wide open. Examples are poems, short stories, letters home from a trip, or just the child/youth‘s view of the adult world.
  • Each contribution should NOT be more than FOUR printed pages.
  • Both Odia and English writings are welcome.
  • Eligibility RequirementsAll children of Odia origin residing in North America (USA and Canada) in the age group of 7 to 18 are eligible to participate.
  • The parents or children need NOT be members of OSA at the time of nomination.

Nomination Process

Writings can be sent in by children or their parents. All articles submitted to the Souvenir will automatically be considered for the award. Keep your articles ready!

  • Author’s Age

  • Phone number (not published – confidential to editors)

Method of Article Submission

All articles should be typed and submitted by e-mail with Subject line – “Article for Meghna Memorial”. Please send copies of the articles for Meghna memorial award to all the editorial team members – urmi@odishasociety.org.
