President's Message
By Prof. Laxmi Narayan Bhuyan

October 1, 2003

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the second edition (October issue) of the OSA newsletter, Utkarsha, posted at the OSA website http://www.orissasociety.org/publications/public.html. It contains some chapter news and updates on various developments during the last couple of months. Here are some highlights:

  1. I am very pleased to report that we have recruited 32 new life members, patrons, or benefactors since July 4, 2003 amounting to a collection of about $9,000 for OSA. The sale for life membership is ending on December 31, 2003. I invite you and your friends to use this opportunity, and to apply for OSA membership now.
  2. I have shipped OSA souvenirs and directories to most of the chapter presidents. If you are a life member/patron/benefactor, and did not receive a copy of the souvenir, please contact your chapter president. Also, check the OSA website to verify that your membership information is correct, otherwise contact us. We have decided not to put addresses of the OSA members on the web page for privacy and security reasons.
  3. The First Annual OSA Symposium on Orissa Development will be held at Bhubaneswar on December 24, 2003 at Swosti Plaza Hotel. This will be like a winter OSA convention focusing on development activities carried out by OSA members in Orissa. We expect good participation at this symposium by OSA members, press representatives, and the Orissa Government officials. If you are in Orissa that time, we invite you to attend. A tentative program appears at http://www.orissasociety.org/events/event.html.Please contact us if you can participate either as a speaker or as an attendee.
  4. The OSA education committee is actively participating in the Orissa Information Technology Society (OITS) and the International Conference on Information Technology (CIT) to be held at Bhubaneswar during December 21-24, 2003. OSA is a co-sponsor of the event. We invite you to attend CIT. Please see web pages at www.citconference.org and http://www.oits.org for further information on program and registration.
  5. Finally, we are in the process of updating the information on OSA constitution, bylaws, amendments, and resolutions. You may obtain these from the OSA website at http://www.orissasociety.org/about/consti.html. Unfortunately, there is no record for any resolutions that have been passed in the General Body Meetings (GBMs) over the years. We would like to document them. If you remember them, please send a note to me or to Dr. S.K. Dash (dash@uaslabs.com) citing the exact resolution, and timing. Also, let us know if you have any suggestion for the amendment of the OSA constitution.

Thank you for your attention. I hope you enjoy the second edition of our newsletter.

The Key To Success

Orissa Educational Activities – A Synopsis
By Dr Sukant Mahapatra and Prof. Rabi N. Mahapatra

The OSA education committee is actively participating in the Orissa Information Technology Society (OITS) and the Sixth International Conference on Information Technology (CIT) to be held at Bhubaneswar during December 21-24, 2003. Fund rising for the conference is in progress through individual and industry sponsorship. Please visit the cyber home of CIT 2003 and OITS at http://www.citconference.org and http://www.oits.org for further information.

Indo-American Friendship Foundation (IAFF) will sponsor high school students from rural Orissa for summer internship in 2004 at National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) (http://www.nist.edu), Berhampur. The objective is to encourage high school students particularly from rural Orissa to work and learn and potentially aspire for higher education and possible career in science and technology.

The Foundation For Excellence (http://www.ffe.org) is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to helping students in India who have demonstrated strong academic ability but do not have the financial resources for education. Volunteers, particularly facilitator from Orissa are needed to facilitate bright and economically disadvantaged students from Orissa to possibly avail the scholarships from the foundation. Please visit foundation website at http://www.ffe.org for more information and contact Prof. Rabi Mahapatra (rabi@cs.tamu.edu) if you could help.
